Last night was my first wedding cake job!
(Well, the first one for a straight couple. But that's a whole 'nother story)
I was really happy with how it turned out, but most of all, I was happy with all the things I learned about the process, like if the wait staff at the reception hall doesn't speak English, you're probably in trouble.
The groom really really likes Big Red soda, which I had never heard of before. The bride asked me to make the groom's cake like a can of Big Red. It kind of commemerated their first date, where they had Big Red and chocolate covered strawberries. I got a can to reference as I decorated. Of course I tried it. It was pretty gross, like carbonated syrupy candy. I don't understand the fixation. But the cake did turn out pretty cool:
The Big Red cake was ready to set out when I got there, so I put it on the cake table while I worked on the wedding cake. As people started trickling into the reception, they COULD NOT leave the cake table alone. "Wow, look at this cake!" "Oh, that's a CAKE?" "Cool, Big Red! Did you make this?"
My favorite part was the groom seeing the cake. He was SO excited, he hugged me. I can only hope every client ends up this happy :)
